The local outdoor sports stores have the Katadyn in stock. Have you tried locally? I got one just like your picture from Amazon, but I see they are arnt sellign them anymore.

I was looking at wheat last week, and asked Wheat Montana (Montana) and Heartland Mill (Kansas) to tell me the price to ship a sample 5 bag (250#) order to Ohio.

Wheat Montana would charge $152 to ship $118 of product
Heartland would charge $163 to ship $240 of product (organic, high priced wheat)

Sorry, but it seems a bit silly to spend more on shipping than the product itself. Wheat Montana DOES have distributors around the country - you might check their website.

A FAR less expensive source is Honeyville Grain. Their price to ship a 1/2 pound can of "stuff": $4.49. Their price to ship 250# of hard red wheat (wheat cost $242): $4.49. EXCELLENT!

Farm feed stores, co-ops, pet stores, and the like are not run by stupid people. They carry different kinds of wheat, quick oats, popcorn, all that stuff that people buy in 100 lb bags. Their shipping cost is a lot less than yours, so it tends to be cheaper, even though you might drive 50 miles or more to find a store. They also carry medicines in case you need some. You don't need a prescription at a pet store.

Agreed good price for shipped super pails......and for those recommending to buy from feed stores I would be very careful......product is usually dirty/dusty lower quality product.

Sorry - I'm not a cream of wheat person. Yuck! I've just over the past year or so started to like yellow corn grits (with a bit of cheddar melted in them, added butter & pepper). Freshly baked bread, on the other hand, is quite nice to eat.

Why "so much" wheat? 250# really isn't all that much - we're only talking about 5 pails or so. I guess if one will always have a 24 hour Super-Walmart open down the street to buy bread, then one might not need to worry about such things.

Providing you can pay 12.00 for a loaf of bread! Remember........Hyperinflation is just around the corner!

Once you start making homemade bread, you will be very particular about buying store bought bread.

Appreciate the info. I thought it would be kind of like Walton Feed's shipping policy - expensive if you order a little, but then you get the "hundred-weight" discount after 200 lbs. But it doesn't look like there's any kind of discount there.

Bottom line, it looks like the best you're going to do mail order is $1/lb. At that rate, the #10 cans from LDS sound pretty good. This thread made me decide to get two more cases along with another case of oats from them. I can hide those - don't have anywhere to stash 5 superpails right now, though.

That's why I asked for a shipping quote on 250# - I wasn't sure if they gave any sort of price break or not. How significant is the "hundred-weight" Walton Feed discount?

THANKS for pointing out the LDS option. A while back, I'd looked at the prices on their cans of wheat, but it just "sounded" high. It's not as cheap as buying bags of wheat directly from their Storage Center ($15-$16 per 50# bag, if you are allowed to do that), but it seems competitive with mail order prices, especially since it's already packed in cans with oxygen absorbers. The LDS Distribution Services also ships these cans for free inside the continental US. Not bad at all. I might need to take another look at that.

I waited till the last minute to do this but other stuff I've been doing for 6 months. The snowball is really rolling down the hill fast now.

I ordered 5 pails from them and its much cheaper than Pleasant Hill or Walton Feed who charges about 70 a pail shipped.

I was hoping that the rapture was before all this. Maybe I'll be witnessing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost that need some help. I'll be in a better position for that than another Christian in a soup line saying God is great.

I've never ordered from them - just parrotting what they said (or used to say - haven't checked lately) on their website. Bottom line, I never could find the time to sit down and make up a big, all-inclusive order that would make the shipping expenses worthwhile. That, and I heard too many stories about how swamped and backed up they were. So I've been hitting it piecemeal, sniping at sales at MRE Depot, Emergency Essentials, Honeyville, etc., and then the occasional orders from LDS.

Yeah, I ordered wheat from LDS this summer, and I think I only paid about $21/case. Now it's over $30, and it's still a bargain....

OUCH! It looks like Honeyville raised their some of their grain prices by ~$2.50/bag (5% increase) just over the past day or so.

Remember that there IS no free lunch. I'm sure Honeyville builds additional margin into their online prices to cover the $4.49 flat-rate shipping charge. They'd be fools to not do that. It looks like they add about $30 per bag to cover shipping, which is about what the other two wheat vendors I checked were charging.

If I had a local marketer of their wheat products close to home (SW Ohio), I'd pick it up directly & save some $$$. as things stand now, Wheat Montana's closest reseller is up near Cleveland - hours away, which makes it not worth the drive.

Yes, I could go to the local feed mill & get bags of wheat for a lot less, but I'd rather know what sort of wheat I'm buying (red/white/hard/soft/winter/...). Being a newbie at home grinding of grains, I don't need too many things to confuse me. That's easy enough to do already!

A friend and neighbor of mine just moved yesterday. They ended up giving me all kinds of stuff that they didn't want to pack in the truck. They gave me 14 cases of 6-#10 cans of dried items from the LDS. Mostly wheat, but some oats, yellow cornmeal, and split peas. Go figure this, they are moving FROM a rural area TO Southern California, directly into the heart of the beast, and giving me their food preps! It's a sad story. They lost their home up here, and are moving down south to be where He works. He works at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo, Ca. The only positives in the story are that He has a pretty safe, and high paying job, and now the family can be together all the time. I guess those are the most important for the short term, but it is sad nonetheless!

I use honneyville most often and I've used beprepared in the past along with the rest of the online venders .I placed an order for 5 pails on the date of my last post to this thread and it arrived today.....only 2 days,I was shocked!!

I think Honeyville is great too. But their shipping costs are built into their prices. So, only buy from them things that you can't buy locally -- freeze dried fruit and veggies, for instance. I almost ordered some flour from them until I suddenly realized that it would cost more than twice what I'd pay at the local grocery store.

But the order for the freeze-dried fruit shipped the same Monday that I placed it and arrived by the end of the week even though it traveled more than half way across the country.

If you're looking for a Biblical famine, you'd be talking about 5 years or more. I don't know anyone who has food storage for that kind of event. But, I can dream, can't I? :36_1_63:

The real problem is that if you store up that kind of food reserve, you will have a huge rotation problem. If you're doing a food storage rotation program on 5-7 years, you won't be eating anything but stored foods. Maybe we should store other things (canned foods, beans, etc.) for the short term (1-5 years) and store wheat berries and freeze dried for the really, really hard times (8 years or more.) We can always feed the squirrels and chickens if Armageddon never happens.

I like to store alot of wheat. That is one thing I dont think I could grow. The rest of the stuff is 2 to 3 years. I know alot of people who think because they have 3 years worth of wheat, they have a food storage. Nothin' else but wheat....

That's how I use Honneyville and the others , honneyville = whole grains & freeze dried fruits aaaand whey protein. I would never buy flour online beside I mill my own, I do on ocassion buy a 25-50 lb sack of unbleached all purpose flour for recipes that won't handle 100% home milled whole wheat.

I just bought a 50lb bag from the local feed mill for $13. I talked to the owner personally about the sutability of it for me grinding it into flour for my consumption. I know him from the local gun club. He said he gets it from a local farm and there is nothing but wheat in the bag. He cleans it at the mill and bags it in sealed paper bags.

I ground some in my vitamix and it works fine. I believe it is white winter (hard) wheat. I also bought a bag of Diamond brand steam rolled oat grouts for $17. Diamond has a website and I downloaded the PFD file....nothing at all added. I put a cup in a bowl and noticed a few hulls. I filled the bowl with water and the hulls floated up and I skimmed them with a slotted spoon and then dumped the water out. Had very good oatmeal for breakfast! If water supply would be a problem you would waste water flushing it like that. I just wanted to try it out. I will still bag up the oats for storage but probably will not get any more.

What was wrong with the feed wheat you bought? Unless it has chemicals or stones/dirt/grit in it just grind it up and try it.
I guess it depends on who processes the wheat when it comes from the field. The mill I got it from is in a small town ,very small!

Not sure about wheat, but I get real clean Oats etc fro our local feed store. Always have a couple hundred pounds on hand for the animals. I figure if IT happens they start eating more grass and the bags go in the house.

I emailed our local mill (Brookhurst Mill) about feed wheat. They replied that the feedwheat is sprayed with mold inhibators and preservitives and should not be used for human consumption.

I would definately check like you did whenever dealing with a local feedmill about the status of thier products. I believe this guy deals in such small quantities he doesn't spray. I will ask him again though to be absolutly sure.The Diamond brand oats specifically says there is nothing added.

I asked the feedmill owner again today about the wheat and he just laughed. He said,"I don't know how many times i'm gonna have to tell you but I don't spray anything on them....nothing in there but wheat". He said he understood though as some places might. So definatly ask!

We've had this discusssion here before. Feed wheat is OK. There is nothing wrong with it and in survival situations will be appreciated.

A better choice is "recleaned wheat" It's exactly the same stuff, but it has been run through the cleaner twice or more/most of the chaff has been removed

Food grade wheat has been cleaned until it is pristine and has no chaff. But it is still the same wheat.

I suppose it does does depend on where you are and what the standard practices are. At the grain elevator/feed mill where I have purchased wheat in the past I have delved into this very question. Their response was that all the grain on the property is treated as "Food grade" and that nothing other than the standard insecticides may, or may not have been added, but those are used on all grains except for probably ORGANIC.

I was told that when they do bag up tofu beans or wheat for flour it all comes from the same source(ie, grain bin). The only difference being how well it is cleaned. Now this might be different than picking up a bag of wheat at the local feed store and I can easily see a problem there.

Perhaps this is because here in the upper midwest we are right in the middle of the grain belt and all the grains are fresh and readily available. They are grown here and processed here.

I made some bread last night with my "feed wheat". Ground it in a vitamix ...so not a real consistant/fine grind, plus my breadmaking technique is not as good as it used to be! Good crust ....grainey texture....did not knead long enough......excellent flavour! I ate 1/4 of a large loaf with butter and coffie.

I found a health food store that sells montana wheat. They are having a 10% off sale. I am picking up 2x50lbs Prairie gold, 2x50lbs. Bronze chief,and a 50lb bag table grade rolled oats $30. The wheat is $31.50 per 50lbs after discount.

I will buy another 4x50lbs of feed wheat @$13 each and will bag it up and call it quits on the grain for now! 100lbs rolled oats....450lbs wheat. :10_1_20:
